Why Display Terminology Matters

Nits

A unit of brightness used to measure how much light a screen emits. One nit equals one candela per square meter. Screens used outdoors or in bright rooms generally benefit from higher nit ratings.

OLED

Organic Light-Emitting Diode — a display technology where each pixel generates its own light. OLED screens can turn individual pixels completely off to achieve true black, resulting in high contrast ratios.

LCD

Liquid Crystal Display — a screen technology that uses a backlight behind a layer of liquid crystals. LCDs are common and cost-effective, but their always-on backlight makes it harder to achieve truly deep blacks.

Aspect Ratio

The proportional relationship between a screen's width and height. Common ratios include 16:9 (widescreen) and 4:3 (older standard). Aspect ratio affects how content is framed but not its resolution or sharpness.

Contrast Ratio

The difference between a screen's brightest white and its darkest black. A higher contrast ratio means the image looks more vivid and dimensional, particularly in scenes with both bright and dark areas.

Resolution in Practice

A common point of confusion is that a higher resolution number doesn't always mean a visibly sharper picture. A 4K display on a 5-inch phone looks extraordinarily crisp because those pixels are crammed into a small area. The same 4K resolution spread across a 75-inch TV at normal viewing distance looks sharp too, but for different reasons — you're simply farther away. The number that ties these together is pixels per inch (PPI), which is the true measure of perceived sharpness.

Refresh Rate and Smoothness

Most people notice refresh rate differences before they can name them. Scrolling through a social media feed on a 60 Hz display feels slightly choppy compared to a 120 Hz display, where motion appears fluid. Gaming and fast-moving video content benefit most from higher refresh rates. For reading static text or viewing photos, the difference is negligible.

HDR, Brightness, and Contrast

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is one of the most misunderstood terms in consumer electronics. It refers to a display's ability to show a wider range between its darkest blacks and brightest whites simultaneously.   • Refresh rate vs. use case: Casual browsing and streaming video rarely require more than 60 Hz. If you play games or do video editing, higher refresh rates offer a meaningful improvement.
